‘A Vital Part of the Community’
VFW Post 2894 in Chesapeake, Virginia, raises funds each year with its Bataan Death March Memorial Walk. The event honors service members who endured the tortuous march as prisoners during World War II and generates proceeds to benefit the Post’s community service activities.
All year round, VFW members at Post 2894 demonstrate how they are Still Serving. They help veterans in need throughout their community by repairing roofs and homes, building wheelchair ramps, providing a food pantry, performing lawn maintenance and more.
Post 2894 partners with local nonprofit organizations and businesses to help serve Chesapeake’s veterans. One such partner, Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, aids with building materials and labor for refurbishing veterans’ homes. National home improvement stores, window providers, and local heating and cooling companies also pitch in to support the Post’s goal of providing veterans with safe, comfortable places to live.
These efforts have not gone unnoticed. In fact, at the 124th VFW National Convention, Post 2894 received the 2023 Fred C. Hall Memorial Outstanding Post Special Project Award.
Post 2894 Service Officer Jim Ireland said, “We are committed to action and support of the veterans in our community, which make us stand out as noted by our city, state and national awards and recognition. We strive to be a vital part of the community.”
