VFW Post 6449 is helping community members enjoy happier, healthier and safer lives.
On October 4, storms darkened the skies over Fairburn, Georgia, but it was a Monday. So, despite poor conditions, members from VFW Post 6449 did what they always do — they packed up food to deliver to veteran families in need throughout the area.
“Sleet, rain or snow — we will be at your door,” said one Post member.
Each Monday, the Post partners with Feeding GA Families and the Robert G. Greene Chapter 555th Parachute Infantry Association to ensure no local veteran goes hungry. This is just one of many ways the Post commits itself to building a happier, healthier and safer community.
Along with its weekly food delivery, VFW Post 6449 also shares nutrition information with its members to encourage health and wellness. And earlier this year, it hosted a chair yoga session for female veterans.
Other special events include a vision board workshop — empowering and motivating veteran members to set goals and create plans to achieve them — as well as “Bingo Sundays” and participation in the One Coalition of Women Empowerment Golf Tournament.
In addition to having fun, Post 6449 takes seriously its part in creating a clean and safe community. Tired of seeing trash within parks and on streets, the Post took action. Now, every third Thursday, members lead a monthly clean-up at a local park.
No matter the activity, for Post 6449, community building and fellowship are central to its mission as seen in a recent social media Post: “Let’s continue the legacy of building the foundation of brotherhood and sisterhood within our community … veterans helping veterans.” Post members have proven that one of the best ways to do this is through extending a helping hand. So, as winter sets in, members are busy collecting cold-weather items and organizing a holiday food drive for those in need this season. Through these efforts and countless others, Post 6449 is #StillServing its veteran members as well as the community at large. The VFW is proud to honor its work.
If you’re a veteran with a #StillServing story to share, we want to hear from you.
