‘I Encourage All Posts to Give Back’

For several years, VFW Post 4272 in Columbus, Mississippi, has partnered with Golden Triangle Outdoors to host the Catfish Roundup. Post members decided it would be a great way to participate in the VFW National Day of Service.

“The event allows mentally and physically disabled individuals to get outdoors and have fun together,” Post Commander Maggy Wesley said. “It seemed like the perfect project for Day of Service since we do it every May.”

For this year’s event, Barksdale Catfish Lakes will donate the use of its pond.

“It’s very generous of them to donate their catfish to these deserving individuals, who otherwise, may not ever have the chance to do something like this,” Wesley said.

Wesley and other Post members will bait hooks, help people cast their lines, and hopefully, reel in fish to be taken home by participants. Any leftover fish will be donated to a local organization, the Homeless Coalition, for use at its fundraiser.

Wesley knows that fellow veterans across the country will be performing their own acts of service as part of the nationwide event. She wants to be sure others outside of the veteran community are aware, too.

“Most VFW Posts are helping their communities. Getting publicity is very important, and VFW Day of Service is a great opportunity for that,” he said. “For example, a mom saw our event last year on the news. She had no idea there was anything like that for her son to participate in. He came out and had a blast.

“I encourage all Posts to get out in the community and give back,” Wesley continued. “When your Post is visible and active, it will grow.

“Day of Service is an easy way to get started. Fill out the event form online, and VFW national headquarters will contact local news outlets to get you the publicity you need.”
