‘I Love Helping My Community’
VFW Life member Amy Huffman is Still Serving her Bluefield, Virginia, community as a member of VFW Post 9696 and by managing multiple volunteer projects.
As Quartermaster, Huffman coordinates her Post’s Saturday night dances, which feature live bands and food.
“I like creating a fun space for our members and their families to come together,” she said.
Huffman also leads her Post’s nursing home committee. Together with other members, she visits veterans to do crafts, share meals and provide companionship. During the Christmas season, Huffman oversees the collection of wish lists of about 40 veterans from nine nursing homes. Her committee assembles and delivers gift boxes and fruit baskets to the veterans.
She also serves on the Color and Honor Guards presenting the Colors at local high school football games and offering final salutes for deceased veterans
Huffman volunteers because assisting others makes her feel good and offers a source of relief from her health issues, which include Post Traumatic Stress and Parkinson’s Disease.
“I love helping my community and promoting the VFW’s mission,” she said.
