‘It Feels Good to Give’
VFW Post 2260 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, is not only a support system for veterans and their families but also a generous contributor that is Still Serving its community.
Post 2260 uses a portion of the money earned at its canteen to provide financial donations to area organizations. These donations enrich public health, education and young people by funding school lunch support, medical and dental services, a senior ride service and Christmas gifts for children in need.
For its 2024 Day of Service, the Post hosted a “Fill the Humvee” food drive event to benefit the Oconomowoc Food Pantry.
Additionally, the Post collaborates with Chapter 635 of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and the American Legion Posts 91 and 399 to ensure that veterans — both living and deceased — are honored for their service and sacrifice.
Each year, the Post holds a Memorial Day observance and parade and places flags at veterans’ grave sites. Its members also present at local schools’ Veterans Day ceremonies, where they provide the color guard, speakers and participants for the programs.
“I like to serve,” said Garrett Collins of VFW Post 2260. “Even though we don’t wear our uniforms anymore, we still serve the community. It feels good to give.”
