‘People Know Our Post is Here to Help’

Barbara McKean served in the United States Air Force for 21 years, from 1988 – 2009. She began her military service at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and for the next 20 years traveled all over the world.

She served at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, Royal Air Force Lakenheath in the United Kingdom, Osan Air Base in Korea, and Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland before coming back to the states. She ended her career in the military while stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

After a long and storied career, she landed back in Parkston, South Dakota, where she grew up. She lives there now with her husband Charles.

Though McKean isn’t officially enlisted anymore, her service to her community and fellow veterans has never been stronger. She is an active participant at VFW Post 3298 in Parkston, South Dakota – #StillServing as the quartermaster and adjutant.

“As quartermaster and adjutant, I coordinate monthly meetings, set up events, type up and distribute all correspondence, handle Post finances, and coordinate our volunteering and fundraising events,” she said.

McKean knows if she can streamline the logistics of running their Post, they can do more for the veterans living in her community.

“Our current project is painting our local American Legion building and adding new signage on the outside,” she said.

“This building is used by our entire community. By improving the overall appearance of the building, we’re not only helping our local veterans’ organizations, we’re helping our entire community. This is a community-wide project.”

McKean says sometimes the best help she can give is pointing people in the right direction.

“I talk to veterans all the time who don’t know how to start the VA claims process. I’ve been able to help many veterans seek the assistance they need to start the process for VA claims, help with family burials or answer questions about their benefits,” McKean said.

Since being involved with her local VFW Post, McKean has made a big impact in her community by volunteering at local events.
