My service dog, Hermes, keeps me grounded and calm. We have been traveling across the US visiting national parks and other beautiful places in the country. Because Hermes is so cute and loving, people often ask to interact with him. I usually allow it because it is beautiful to see the joy he brings to others, especially kids and the elderly. These interactions with Hermes lead to amazing conversations with strangers that otherwise would not happen due to my social anxiety. The peace and joy Hermes brings to me and others allows us to connect and share these moments together.

Why do you do it?

I’ve come to realize how important human interactions are, even the short ones that may simply be exchanging kind words and a smile. Hermes has opened my heart and allowed me to be social again, helping me and others to connect and enjoy life on new levels. I do it hoping that this joy can brighten someone’s day, or maybe even save someone’s life.
