Where did you serve and what did you do?
George Hazard is my dad, he served in Vietnam. He volunteered before they could draft him. He was a tank mechanic for the cavalry unit.
How are you #StillServing?
George has been a past Commander for Post 2338 even during the time his daughter (me) was serving in the Army and sent overseas. He has many hours volunteering at the post and the many events we hold.
When I got sick my dad and mom were having to drive me the 1 1/2 hours to Syracuse hospital for my blood work and testing. With knowing the drive very well and not having to take me as often, he got certified to drive the volunteer DAV van. When you ride with him, he chats with everyone and they are chatting back by the end of the ride home. I am so proud of my dad and the time and work he has put into helping other veterans, including his daughter.
Why do you do it?
He does it because he can. He is able to do it for veterans that can’t drive – that don’t have the family to help them get to the appointments they need for their health. He was able to do it with me and realized after our visits that others didn’t have that. He stepped up.
