Where did you serve and what did you do?

I completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and served a 30-year career in the United States Army. Throughout my service, I held every leadership position at the non-commissioned officer level, leading and mentoring soldiers across multiple units and missions. I deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom, serving in roles that required adaptability, accountability, and mission-focused leadership under demanding conditions. My final assignment was as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer teaching ROTC at three universities, where I focused on developing the next generation of military leaders in character, discipline, and service. I retired from the Army as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, concluding a career dedicated to leadership development and service to others.

How are you Still Serving?

My service didn’t end with retirement, it evolved. Today, I continue serving as a veteran advocate, motivational speaker, leadership coach, certified personal trainer, and community volunteer. I host the podcast “Motivated Mindset with Jose Flores,” in partnership with Military Broadcast Radio, the station that gives Veterans a Voice, where I amplify real stories of resilience, faith, leadership, and reinvention. I also serve through: Community organizations such as Lions Club and Habitat for Humanity Volunteering in hospice care as a trained End-of-Life Death Doula Supporting veterans and purpose seekers navigating life after service, retirement, or loss My work today focuses on helping people heal, rebuild identity, and step forward with intention.

Why do you do it?

do this because I understand how difficult life transitions can be, especially after years of service, leadership, or personal loss. I’ve seen firsthand how losing a role or title can leave people feeling disconnected, uncertain, or stuck. I believe service is not something you retire from it’s something you redefine. My purpose is to help others rediscover who they are beyond the uniform or position, strengthen their resilience, and reconnect with faith, purpose, and community. If my story, voice, or experience helps even one person listen, heal, lead, and serve again, then my mission continues.
