Where did you serve and what did you do?
For many years the Membership of All-American VFW Post 2805 has served lunch on Wednesdays. A homecooked hot meal prepared right here in our Post Kitchen by volunteers from our Membership and Post Auxiliary. I’m talking about real meals, not fast food.
The shutdown here came just before St. Patrick’s Day. The Post had already been gearing up to serve the traditional corned beef and cabbage meal that day as we do every year when we found out we had to close. Preparations already being underway we decided to serve to-go meals on a drive-thru basis. It was a big hit. We have our share of elderly members and friends who look forward to our once a week real meal and we only charge $6.00. From pasta dishes to smoked tri-tip to pork chops. It may only be every Wednesday but it’s something people look forward to and it’s all done by Volunteers from our Post Membership and Auxiliary.
How are you #StillServing?
Well, it worked once so why not try it again. Last Wednesday we served up a smoked tri-tip lunch with potatoes, mixed veggies and a green salad. Drive-thru basis again and we sold out. This coming Wednesday we are serving up pulled pork. Our plan is to continue this till the time comes we can reopen again.
Why do you do it?
I’m sure you could get quite a few different answers to that question depending upon whom you talked to at our Post. That being said I will try to sum it all up like this. The serving of just one meal a week sounds like no big deal I know. But if you could see the look of joy on some people’s faces as they are so thankful it’s just amazing. We don’t do this because we have to, we do it because we want to. People walk away with a great meal, and we get to walk away knowing that we just made someone’s day a little bit better. What more can you ask for?
