Where did you serve and what did you do?
I’m a Desert Storm and Operation Restore Hope Marine Veteran
How are you #StillServing?
I have been a volunteer firefighter for 26 years and a volunteer EMT for 17 years
Why do you do it?
Just like every kid that wanted to be a firefighter it’s something I wanted to do. As I grew older that desire never went away. My dad was a veteran and a volunteer firefighter so I thought it would be really cool to be the 2nd generation to be a veteran to serve my hometown as a firefighter. I was there for 12 years before I moved. I was able to join the local department in my wife’s hometown. I didn’t know anyone so I have no ties other than her. My department is much more active in community relations. Seeing the kids at the local school during fire prevention week get all excited to see us every year is the best part of it. But, being there for people during the worst of times is something that is difficult to explain. The gratitude that is displayed by the victims of fires or car accidents is probably the greatest feeling. Obviously we don’t do it for the paycheck, it’s the feeling that you did something good for someone, and I think more need people do good things for someone. It truly is a feeling that can’t be described, and that feeling is why I do it.
