Where did you serve and what did you do?

My wife and I were member of 9983. She was the district and lodge treasurer for the Auxiliary and canteen manager, and I was the district quartermaster, and the bar keep in the lounge. Between my experience with the DAV, VFW, MMOA and other veterans' groups, I had a bit of knowledge that I passed on to the members when they needed information, and when I couldn't answer their questions, I found someone who would. Our commander at the time got Home Depot to donate $15,000 to the lodge in materials and volunteer help refurbishing the lodge. We also built a better more user-friendly bar for the lounge and spent many hours volunteering in and around the VFW. It was a great 5 years of fun and camaraderie. For a while, we both were chaperones for the Young Marine Program at MCAS New River.

How are you Still Serving?

Not as much as I use to. I would but my interest has shifted and I am more community service based with Americanism and youth leadership in the community.

Why do you do it?

To be a part of something bigger and to give back. I know at some point in time it will be my turn to sit back and turn the reins over to the younger generation as I know my time will start to wane. But until I feel that time is here, I will push forward to continue the mission and be a part of something bigger than myself.
