Where did you serve and what did you do?
I am the Community Liaison for Post 5036. Non-military, I represent the activities of our post.
How are you #StillServing?
We outreach to homebound and nursing-home-bound veterans with cards, phone calls, food pantry deliveries every month. We send out notes of support to all members every few weeks, during this past time of isolation, and continue to do so. We meet in person and via Zoom, reaching our homebound and out of town members now, and are upgrading our video & sound to improve communications.
We have coffee & donut fellowship twice weekly with a food pantry through Salvation Army & we donate back to SA witen we get sponsor donations, ex: 200 lbs of coffee!
We have a “Community Member” program for civilians to connect with our vets, and have 28 participating! We initiated a joint annual effort with Legion, AMVETS & VVA 9/17/20, to celebrate Constitution Day, handed out over 300 pocket Constitutions, flags, had a ceremony w/Medal of Honor Recipient Allen J. Lynch.
Launched a street banner program to honor any local veteran, the St. Charles Freedom Corridor, 14 banners hang currently in a 3-month program-every family gets a small-scaled version for the home/can order more for family members.
We installed a ramp and back deck for WWII Veteran COL Angelo DiLiberti, 93 yrs and a ramp and VA HISA grant for 95 yr old WWII Vet Bob Pennington. We drive our seniors to doctor appointments and visit in-home with them as needed.
Why do you do it?
To reach out far into the community, honor veterans, bring new members into the community of fellowship and support, fill the needs of our senior veterans.
