Where did you serve and what did you do?
This is not for me, but for our VFW Post (10804 in N. Myrtle Beach, SC).
The post was contacted by a nearby Veterans Resource Center on their need for food for needy veteran families in their system. Lew Ogonowski, a prominent member of the Post and the leader of the Post Golf League, contacted the golf team members and expressed a desire to hold a food drive to help out the Resource Center. A plan was put in motion to hold a ‘drive-by’ food donation event at the post on Saturday 4 April. The event would last only one hour (to keep down social interaction). Word was also spread to the membership and Auxiliary by way of an email and the post website. The day of the event, members of the golf team, the Post and Auxiliary donated almost 400 pounds of food. This food was packaged and immediately taken to the Veteran Resource Center where volunteers there would organize the food into food-baskets and distribute it to veterans and their families in need during these trying times.
How are you #StillServing?
As with all other Posts, our Post is closed for the duration of this pandemic. This does not put an end to veterans in need. There are many who will come out if this with drastic financial short-comings. As a Post, we will do whatever we financially can to help our area veterans in need. I also know that many individual members are donating parts of their personal resources to help veterans in need.
Why do you do it?
Because as a member of the VFW, that is what you do!
