How are you #StillServing?
Back in July I started and host a community veteran and their spouses monthly veteran get-together at our community club house. Coffee, water and pastry snacks are provided. The idea is to provide some information informative to veterans and to allow an outlet for open discussion. Any attending veteran, or their spouse, is free to talk on any subject they choose. One meeting I had a representative from the local VA Clinic come and talk about services available at that clinic, how to find out if you are eligible to apply for VA services, wills, types of veteran burials available, volunteering at a VA facility and numerous other subjects. There are 20 known veteran families in our community (Korea era and later). Up to 16 of them have attended these get-together’s. The November meeting (planned for the 11th) will have another guest speaker. My original plan was to have a one-time, or infrequent, meeting. The group asked I do this monthly and I will as long as there is an interest.
Why do you do it?
I saw an opportunity to get community veterans to come together for open discussion and comradeship. I did not expect it to work as well as it has and for it to be so receptive. less than half the attendees are VFW eligible, but I do encourage them to get involved with the VFW, American Legion or DAV. The picture is of me and Mrs. Anderson, VA Volunteer Services Coordinator for the Myrtle Beach VA Clinic, at one of my monthly meetings.
