Where did you serve and what did you do?
I volunteer as a guitar instructor with Guitars for Vets, teaching combat veterans to play guitar and using music as a tool for healing. I also take veterans fishing and organize outdoor outings to help them connect, decompress, and build community. At the VFW, I’m active on the House Committee and in meetings, and this year I’ve helped bring several new members into our post through these programs.
How are you Still Serving?
I volunteer with Guitars for Vets, teaching combat veterans to play guitar as a path to healing and connection. At the VFW, I serve on the House Committee, support post meetings, and actively recruit new members. I also organize fishing trips and other outdoor events to foster camaraderie and community among local veterans.
Why do you do it?
Returning from overseas and separating from the military left me in a difficult headspace, and I know how isolating that season can be. Because of that, I’m committed to paying it forward. Through Guitars for Vets, I teach combat veterans to play guitar, using music as both skill and therapy. I organize fishing trips and outdoor gatherings where veterans can connect, decompress, and talk openly. Within the VFW, I serve on the House Committee, support post operations, and actively bring in new members this year, so more of us can find our place. Above all, I share the tools that helped me heal, and when those aren’t the right fit, I stay with each person until we find what works for them.
