‘That’s How I Support My Community’

Anna Arnold served in the Army for four years before retiring to the small town of Menno, South Dakota, about 30 miles outside of the VFW Post she calls home — Post 791 in Yankton, South Dakota.

After high school, Arnold wasn’t sure what she wanted to do but knew she wasn’t ready for college.

“I needed to get out on my own and start a life,” she said. “My father suggested I join the military, so I went and talked to a recruiter. I decided that was how I could start my own path.”

Today, Arnold is #StillServing in her community by working at the VFW Department of South Dakota as their quartermaster and adjutant. She is also the commander of Post 791.

During her time off, she volunteers as an ambassador for the Wings of Valor Lodge, a pheasant hunting lodge for veterans on their healing journey.

“Every single day I get the opportunity to work with and for veterans,” Arnold said. “We are always doing something in our community to help out, big or small.”

In recognition of her hard work, Arnold was elected vice president for the South Dakota Veterans Council – a council made up of six federally charged veteran organizations that lobbies for veterans’ rights legislation in South Dakota.

“Recently, we passed a piece of legislation to increase the number of veterans who can receive long-term care at a facility of their choosing,” she said. “I’m quite proud of that one.”

This spring, Arnold was honored to host six female veterans from all over the country at their Post in South Dakota.

“Any veteran that shows up to help, puts themselves out there to give back, and goes the extra mile when needed makes an impact,” she said.

“Whether that impact is small or large it doesn’t matter. That’s why I’m always ready to get my hands dirty, lend a hand, or do anything else that’s needed. Sometimes all people need is a listening ear. That’s how I support my community.”
