VFW Post Logs Thousands of Monthly Volunteer Hours
For VFW Post 2780, Still Serving is simply a way of life — whether that means serving veterans or community members.
Between its Post members and Auxiliary members, the Traverse City, Michigan, VFW Post logs thousands of hours every month volunteering in its community. Volunteer service includes visiting veteran and non-veteran residents in nursing homes and assisting with local youth activities.
The Post’s partnerships with other community and nonprofit organizations include two local American Legion Posts, the 82nd Airborne Division Association, the Grand Traverse Fire Department, the Northern Michigan College Police Academy, several scout packs and troops, Grand Traverse County Veterans Affairs, Toys for Tots and Bikes for Tykes.
With a wide range of activities, Post 2780 hosts regular food and toy drives, collects donated school supplies, provides Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner baskets to veterans and arranges pro bono legal services working with a local former judge advocate general attorney.
In a unique and important project, the Post also collaborated with the Library of Congress, U.S. Senator Gary Peters and Northwestern Michigan College to host the Veterans’ Oral History Project for local veterans to memorialize their stories in the Library of Congress.
