Where did you serve and what did you do?

I served in the US Navy from 2001-2022. I retired as a Chief Master-at-Arms (MAC). Various deployments during my career to include Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Afghanistan; Iraq; and various other Ship and overseas deployments and assignments.

I recently completed a 5-week program with Northwest Battle Buddies and was paired with a beautiful English Cream Golden Retriever named Daisy. She is my battle and goes with me everywhere. She helps me be the best version of me for myself, my wife and my children. She’s the bell of the ball when we are out and about and is a huge hit when I am conducting veteran outreach with my VFW, Honor Flight of Portland and various other organizations that I volunteer with/for.

Why do you do it?

Retiring from the military was a huge life change for me. Being active duty had become a huge part of who I am and my identity and I struggled with transitioning way more than I could have ever expected. Even though I returned to my home of record, I found I didn’t actually relate to it as home anymore. I struggled big time and it was adversely impacting my relationships with those around me, with my own mental health. Finding the resources necessary for me to navigate everything and to help me feel comfortable in public settings was instrumental in restoring balance for me and my family. Seeking a service dog was recommended by my therapist and my wife and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. Continuing to connect with veterans and ensure they getting the resources they need to be the best versions of themselves is part of my healing and my balance.
