W Germany & S Korea, plus a number of state-side posts; Army Ranger and Combat Engineer officer, 26 years Regular Army & Army Reserve.

Tell us how your dog is helping you continue Still Serving in your community.

The Dog, Sonny, is my son’s dog. Dane served in Germany, Kosovo, and Iraq; he came home from Iraq with serious PTSD and had to start things over. He lives with his wife about 100 miles from us, so we visit in person only every 3 months or so. A few years ago on one of our visits, almost as soon as I sat down and was talking to Dane, Sonny came and put his head on my leg and just stayed there. I had had a rough week and was still stressed out, so it took a few minutes before it occurred to me. I looked at Dane and asked if Sonny was a comfort dog. He had gotten it a few months earlier at no cost to him. Dane was grinning and laughed when I realized what Sonny was there for.

Why do you do it?

I grew up with the desire to be a soldier, when I graduated from high school the faculty awarded me the citizenship award. I bleed Red, White and Blue. I joined the VFW to honor my father (WWII & Newport OR VFW). I enjoy the comradery and helping Vets in need. My favorite activity is working with the youth on VOD & PP.
