Where did you serve and what did you do?

I am the Sr VP of VFW POST 3256 located in Montague MI 49437. For the last 4-5 years I have asked veterans from our post to do teaching in the classroom. This year I had 8 veterans, dressed in their honor guard uniforms attend Whitehall Middle School in Whitehall Middle School, Whitehall MI. This helps the students, teacher etc. in preparing for the Patriot Pen Essay Competition. The students are able to ask questions of the veterans and it helps them to understand patriotism, democracy, patriotic values etc. which helps them write their essays. The veterans throughly enjoy this and. “still serve” by giving a soldier’s perspective on how they felt going into snd returning from service to our country. Ironically, all of them for the last 5 yrs said they would do it again….even though many of them were treated horribly when they came home. This information ….students can’t get from a textbook…and teachers can’t teach..however it instills integrity, honor, patriotism and values in our community and this is stuff they can’t get from a text book….and the veterans grateful..that …is the welcome home many of them never had. values for the students and community.

Why do you do it?

They did it because they want their community to understand the sacrifices they made were for their communities best interest….they answered the call to serve …being drafted or volunteering for service…there is a noble cause more than”what’s in it for me” mentality..they love America, their family, their community…they want those values to be never forgotten especially for those who did not make it back home.
