Where did you serve and what did you do?

I was both Active Duty and Army National Guard for 34 years. I’ve served in Germany and in Operation Desert Storm. I was an Ordnance officer later becoming a Logistics Officer. I retired in 2011 with the last 8 years of my time was spent working as a Dual-status, Civil Service for the Arkansas Army National Guard.

How are you Still Serving?

I currently run a U.S. Flag Education Program through a local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. We have a few other members that take time to go to area schools to teach them about the Flag, some history, the Star-Spangled Banner, and how to be a good citizen in their community. Our chapter funds the program with help from two American Legion posts to buy Flag Lapel Pins and print a brochure to give to each student that completes the presentation.

Why do you do it?

Many teachers in schools we visit say this is very much needed in today’s society and appreciate myself or one of our instructors delivering this presentation. The kids love it when we come in uniform as well and the question/answer period get interesting at times. We go back to each school every year giving this presentation to one grade (usually the 5th grade) and we’ve established a good relationship with area principals and staff.
