Tell us how your dog is helping you continue Still Serving in your community.

I thought I would update Lea’s and my story this year. Since moving to Durham we have found new places to serve. We volunteer 3 days a week with Open Table, a non profit that works with the unsheltered in downtown Durham. Lea has become the emotional support pup in both the office and with the population we serve. As I help people get clothing, ID documents or other services they might need, Lea gives out all the love. Additionally, we started attending a new church this year, where Lea has also become a therapy dog for the church kids who struggle with mental health issues. She is even on the church’s webpage now! Check out www.asburyunitedmethodist.com. Lea being in my life as my service dog has helped me re-engage the world. As I have become healthier, she is now able to share her love with so many others.

Why do you do it?

Service gives me a sense of meaning and purpose and helps me stay healthy mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Lea has enabled me to do this and has found her owns roles of service in the process.
