Where did you serve and what did you do?

I served during the Cold War in Berlin Germany working on mainframe computers involved in gathering intelligence information.

How are you Still Serving?

I am a member of Team Rubicon, a group of ex-military folks that serve on disaster response scenes and disaster preparedness projects such as fire break work, all over the world. I have a small farm and my own business, so my service with TR is limited to local operations. I am also an active CERT team member in my neighborhood. My passion is animal rescue and I spent a lot of time during the 2018 eruption on my island hauling all kinds of creatures out of the lava zone. I currently do pro bono legal work to support animal rescue organizations and their animal fosters and adopters. Hawaii has its share of potential natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, flooding, and volcanic eruptions, so I try to serve my local community.

Why do you do it?

I do it because it makes me feel good to give something back. When I was young and ignorant many folks helped me out and now that I am older I think is it my kuleana, which means responsibility, privilege, duty, to help my friends and neighbors and contribute to this beautiful state and culture that is Hawaii.
